When you are six, or even eight, days are measured out in sounds and sights and smells.  Time doesn’t yet have its license to drive in these carefree lives, so it must take a back seat to merrier chauffeurs: endless Curiosity, infinite Wonder and uncontainable Joy.  Grandma’s backyard is the travel map to navigate for these fearless explorers and the winding journey is an unhurried one.  It has as many detours as a wrap-around porch, a golden fenced pasture, a paint-splattered wildflower meadow and groves of hardwoods tossing jewel-toned confetti in a cool breeze can come up with.  On this adventure, everything is astonishing.  As leaves turn and deepen against a peacock-blue sky in the late season, cascading into hip-high piles of jumping pleasure- it’s nothing short of a gala event!  Another reason for an arms-in-the-air, feet-off-the-ground celebration.  Look at that!!  Has this particular brand of free-wheeling magic ever been attempted before?

Who knows how we ever turned off this happy road, but these days we tend to measure trips in numbers- gallons of gas, miles left to drive, hours spent away from work.  How blessed then are we that the artist, wandering down a favorite dusty road of his own, offers us a touchstone of a time and place in a season of freedom to anchor us, bring us back to who we really are.  Fully alive in a moment, caught up again in Childhood Friends.
